This is the story of possibly the greatest open boat voyage of all time.

The first part of what will be a trilogy if the author survives to complete the future legs of his voyage, it is the gripping narrative of a 7,000 mile voyage, alone, across the Pacific in an open, unballasted, eighteen foot yawl weighing only 850 pounds. The author tells of surviving fifty knot gales, two capsizes, two weeks adrift in a rubber raft, and shipwreck on an island in the New Hebrides.

Along the way, he landed on exotic islands where adventures, both romantic and unromantic, befell him the Marquesas, where he found the valley that moved Melville to write of the glamorous Fayaway in TYPEE; beautiful but crowded Tahiti; Bora-Bora; Pago-Pago; Fiji; and the New Hebrides, where the natives of Emae Island saved his craft so that his voyage may go on.

Webb Chiles's OPEN BOAT takes its place among a select few books about the sea that have captured the imagination of the landlocked as well as the seafaring.

The Open Boat Across the Pacific The Open Boat Voyage eBook Webb Chiles

I read this book shortly after finishing "Storm Passage - Alone Around Cape Horn" by the same author. I recommend reading them this way, as The Open Boat is almost a sequel to Storm Passage, and it all makes a lot more sense that way. He often eludes back to the earlier voyages. It would have been more fun to read if it had been more witty and not so serious, although I laughed hard out loud when he said he got drenched and hung his clothes out on the boom, then said he was making good way under a reefed mainsail, the jib, one pair of pants, a sweater, and a pair of sox, or something to that effect. He's actually a very good writer with a nice, very readable style. I was somewhat disappointed that the maps and pictures were difficult to make much out of in the Kindle version. I'll probably read some more of his books.

The Open Boat Across the Pacific The Open Boat Voyage eBook Webb Chiles Reviews

Good book Mr Chiles is quite the character. I met him right before he left San Diego on his Moore 24 for his 6th or 7th circumnav. I wish him all the best and may the wind stay at his back. I like to sail probably more than most but what this guy has been through would probably have me moving to Kansas. The book is a good read more about his stops and only a bit about the actual sailing.
I enjoyed this book so much that I was reread it and have to admit, that it more enjoyable the second time. Mr. Chiles is quite the writer, making the mundane as the exciting as some of the more life threatening parts of the book. I look forward many more of his adventures.

An intriguing journey into the terrors and beauty of an ocean passage . How he survived is amazing and a great testament to human endurance and spirit
When I first started reading this book my first thought was this guy has a few screws loose. I mean why would you put yourself through this?
But as I read on I began to understand and my admiration built.
This type of sailing is not for the faint hearted but hats off for those with the guts to do it
What an adventure! To set out around the world in nothing more than an open dinghy - just to see whether it can be done - takes enormous grit and courage, and more than just a steady hand at the tiller! Webb describes his voyage in candid detail - outlining the highs and lows that such an adventure produces, interspersed with interesting historical facts of landfalls he makes along the way. I was absolutely spellbound and couldn't book the book down. Being a (fine weather) dinghy sailor myself, I can imagine a little of what he might have been feeling on the better parts of the voyage, but to be out in the middle of an ocean in an unrelenting storm not really knowing how close you are to death must be as scary a white-knuckle ride as you're likely to experience! And remember, he's doing this voluntarily! Read it - and be sure not to miss the sequel - THE OCEAN WAITS - as they're both excellent books that are bound to put your own life into sharp perspective!
Here's a great story about a man pitting himself against the might of the Pacific Ocean in an open boat. One of those great little boats that you would be happy to spend several days in, cruising round the coast. But not this sailor. He heads for Polynesia!

I enjoyed most of this book. The edition is a bit of a shambles, and there are moments when you have to worry about the author's sanity, but his humor and wonderful descriptions always carried this reader through.
At times Webb unwittingly imparts a bit of the unenviable boredom that naturally accompanies a solo voyage (but hold on to your "boos"). But as similarly as a firefighters life can be sprinkled with moments of shear terror, this book is hard to put down for the very same reason. I spend much of my free time in sheltered backwaters on an 18' dory that is scarily similar to Chidiock and the mere thought of venturing beyond the breakwater gives me pause. The next time you think life has dealt you a blow, pick this book up and read a few chapters. You will find, as I have, that nothing in your path could possibly be that hard to overcome.
