This was the third-best selling book in the United States in 1895. It begins "Early in the spring of the year 1884, the three-masted schooner Castor, from San Francisco to Valparaiso, was struck by a tornado off the coast of Peru. The storm, which rose with frightful suddenness, was of short duration, but it left the Castor a helpless wreck. ... "The Castor was an American merchant-vessel, commanded by Captain Philip Horn, an experienced navigator of about thirty-five years of age. Besides a valuable cargo, she carried three passengers—two ladies and a boy. ... "But when the storm had passed, and the sky was clear, and the mad waves had subsided into a rolling swell, there seemed no reason to believe that any one on board the Castor would ever reach Valparaiso. The vessel had been badly strained by the wrenching of the masts, her sides had been battered by the floating wreckage, and she was taking in water rapidly. Fortunately, no one had been injured by the storm, ...." All of the row boats had been blown off of the ship, but the crew was able to retrieve two of them from the sea; and "...in less than three hours after the vessel had been struck, the two boats, containing all the crew and the passengers, besides a goodly quantity of provisions and water, and such valuables, clothing, rugs, and wraps as room could be found for, were pulling away from the wreck." The adventure thus begins, lost at sea somewhere off of the unsettled coast of Peru with only a vague idea of where they are.Frank Richard Stockton (April 5, 1834 – April 20, 1902) was an American writer and humorist, best known today for a series of innovative children's fairy tales that were widely popular during the last decades of the 19th century and for his short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" (1882) which has been called the most famous riddle mystery of all time. Stockton avoided the didactic moralizing common to children's stories of the time, instead using clever humor to poke at greed, violence, abuse of power and other human foibles, describing his fantastic characters' adventures in a charming, matter-of-fact way in stories like "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" (1885) and "The Bee-Man of Orn" (1887), which was published in 1964 in an edition illustrated by Maurice Sendak. "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" won a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1963. His 1895 adventure novel The Adventures of Captain Horn was the third-best selling book in the United States in 1895.

Written in 1895, this book is fresher, crisper and better paced that you might expect. After a brief setup we dash ahead to a shipwreck, and then it's survival, pirates, treasure, escapes, fights, hardships and mystery right up to the slam bang finish. This is adventure escapism with a sly sense of humor, and written with a sure hand. It can be a bit dry in places, or perhaps I should say "stiff", but never for very long and never to the detriment of the overall experience. It may not exactly be "Treasure Island", but it's not that far off the mark.

This is a Kindle freebie version of a public domain 1910 edition. It doesn't have any bells or whistles, (and no illustrations or active table of contents), but you can change the font size. It is properly formatted and was perfectly readable on my Kindle Touch, which to me is pretty much the most you can ask of a Kindle freebie. All in all, an entertaining and better than expected find.

I really don't know how to classify this book. I would guess an adventure/travel/romance novel - but not really very much "romance" in it. I enjoyed it, and would compare it to Robinson Couroso ( not sure of the spelling of the last name) and Treasure Island.......
A well written book that develops character along with an exciting and exotic plot. It has sea voyages, pirates, storms, remote location survival situations, San Francisco and Paris hotel life...well, there's pretty much something for everyone with a cast of very interesting characters. All this bound up in a moral problem that must be solved.
I give it four stars. This story has it all; shipwreck, pirates, desperate battles, and, a lost treasure! Now, of course, we can't dwell on this sort of fantasy in our times, as finding a lost treasure and recovering it, etc., would in the modern parlance be considered theft of a great national historical and cultural legacy. In 19th century terms, it's just a lot of loot to be had by whomever can get it and keep it! Well worth the time to read it. Considering you can get this for free on , that makes it a hearty heist.
Mr. Stockton's tale of the adventures of Capt. Horn is a great read. It tells a gripping tale set in the world of the nineteenth century. The prejudices and unthinking harshness of man to man are mitigated by the author's subtle sarcasm towards these mores of his day. The dawn of our own slightly improved state is seen in this and in so many of his other works, although this was certainly not his main purpose, which was always to entertain as well as educate. You won't regret reading any of his wonderful stories.
I do not read fiction. A story of ancient seafarers still captivate me. It took me 65 pages to realize that this is all fiction. Having read Stockton's books before, I continued to read all through the book through all of the twists and turns. Just when you think you have it all figured out, there is another twist. It is quite the adventure story and well worth the read by even history buffs like myself.
The Adventures of Captain Horn is a page turner. Each chapter has a new twist to the plot. I read it and my husband and I listened to it on a 15 hour drive. It made the long drive more enjoyable. I do recommend it.
It has everything; treasure, shipwreck, caves, fights, pirates, other villains, romance, narrow escapes, deserts, hardships, mystery and a satisfying ending. There are two reasons I do not give it a five. First, the two major characters are not well described so as to create a word picture of them. Second, black folks are not presented in very flattering terms, though not pointedly derogatory.
